This Summer I watched How To Steal A Million in a tiny open air cinema on a Greek Island, it was an old worn out print with terrible sound but even that did not stop Audrey Hepburn’s luminous screen presence & breathtaking beauty. I’d never seen this charming film before, the clothes by Monsieur Hubert de Givenchy are sublime, timeless & some of those oversize swing coats are bang on trend, just perfect for this Autumn/Winter. So the make up in the film is naturally very 60’s (with the matte base and heavy defined dark eye socket) but there is one scene in which Ms Hepburn’s character is trying to be incognito wearing a black lace veil and under it we see that she is sporting rather amazing glitter on her eye lids. See above the brilliant & legendary makeup artist in action Mr Alberto Di Rossi (no relation to Portia Di Rossi, Ellen’s Mrs) This fabulosity inspired me to do a glitter post. Glitter is something that the last couple of seasons we have seen a huge come back. We have seen it in the Feb A/W12 shows in the form of disco divas (Meadham Kirchoff), to pretty & Bardot like (Moschino Cheap & Chic) and also in nude shades too for a subtle but most definite highlight at the shows (Felder Felder). I designed the FF makeup which on the eye was an arid bronze look with a dreamy veil of fine silver glitter across the eyes that looked like tears in the moonlight. It was inspired by ‘rock n roll, post apocalypse. So click on these brands for my favourite glitters: MAC Pro, Paris Berlin (I love their Diamond Dust it is mega) Ben Nye and Barry M who do a variety of sizes and even shapes like hearts (yay!) My top tips for working with glitter is do the glitter makeup first then clean the rest of the face as glitter drops & you will need to clean the glitter fall out around it. Clean with a wet wipe or I use celotape as glitter adheres perfectly to it. Use your fingers or a brush that you don’t mind getting trashed, try a cheap synthetic one from an art shop or makeup supply store and to ensure that the glitter stays on the lids use a cream shadow first or even a little amount of clear duo glue. This is a fun trend that anyone can try out and it can be as subtle or as extreme as you like so channel your inner Audrey Hepburn and we end on a quote from her, ‘The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.’
