Way Bandy was the first celebrity makeup artist, he also looked and behaved like a movie star himself, often appearing in magazines, interviews and society photos. He was famous for his work with Hollywood stars, great musicians & all the top models of the day (some of his clients: Sofia Loren, Diana Ross, Iman, Brooke Shields, Renne Russo & Cher) I love his shoots with legendary photographer Francesco Scavullo. Way Bandy pioneered the super healthy preppy all American look, that I adore & is still so en vogue because everyone looks great that way thus being a hit both commercially with clients & editorially with editors. The palette was all tawny, peachy, brown & nude shades with contours and highlights & the texture included high shine & gloss. I am lucky enough to own a copy of his now out of print 1977 book Designing Your Face. The book is a step by step guide to makeup with tips and technical advice with charming drawings, photographs and illustrations. Way Bandy was one of the first makeup artists to put a book out & market himself to the public. He was a beauty pioneer & a makeup wizard. I would like to Quantum Leap back in time and watch him work or maybe just go to Studio 55 with him for cocktail and a spin around the dance floor.
