Seems that the makeup palette like a judge on X factor is having it’s comeback. For years palette was kind of like a dirty word in beauty because all that was really available were cheesy gimicky ones that were like a gift with purchase, filled with unwearable strange colours that I imagine were 80’s dead stock that had escaped from a warehouse or perhaps that you might see in duty free or inflight shopping magazines in various shades of frosted Katie Price style princess pink or ones for actual mini princess’s with pink packaging as seen here in Argos. For years I have bought my own palettes and filled them to my personal product specification to take to work but never really used on myself (too much effort getting them out of my kit) Sometimes I fantasise about turning up to a shoot dressed in Yohji and pulling out one perfect minimal palette instead of dragging around the globe a heavy product filled suitcase and at last that dream of John Pawson-esque minimalism is starting to become a reality. Brands are always looking for the next big thing and this I think is it. I was sent lip palettes by MAC Pro they have launched them in reds, browns, plums, oranges and pinks with 6 shades of a colour in each palette. They are perfect. Every makeup artist should have these in their kit and every gal should have a palette to experiment with the different shade/tone/texture of a specific colour. I also love the Bobbi Brown University palette. This palette has foundation on one side & concealer on the other. it works on every skin tone and I use it all the time and it is great as well for body makeup coverage. Eyeshadow palettes: I really love all the Tom Ford eye colour quads that come in a beautiful colour range with a variety of textures to achieve different finish results from colour, highlight, contour & definition. Lets face it these are as close to an actual palette that the eternally chic Mr Ford will probably actually produce. I have been using the Smashbox cream eyeliner palette too which I adore as it comes in tons of great shades and in matte & metallic which is bang on trend for a graphic eye this A/W12. There are so many palettes being launched that provide mini brushes or applicators and although these are getting better I still prefer to use my own brushes. I must say that I am delighted that the marketing peeps at the beauty brands finally realised that palettes don’t have to be for Christmas, they can be for life.
