I wanted to create an updated contoured make-up inspired by these gorgeous iconic women from the 70s and 80s: think of Brooke Shields as shot by Avedon or Scavullo, Lauren Hutton, Faye Dunaway, Gia Carangi, and Catherine Ross. Contouring is about bringing out your bone structure by defining your shadow. Today I did contour on the cheeks and eyes but not the nose. I like natural noses, they give character to a face. Feel for your cheek bone and put your thumb or finger underneath: that’s where you shade and don’t go more than three shades darker than your skin tone. On your eyes it’s through the crease and you can go as dark as you like. Change the contour to suit the shape of your face, you might need a more rounded or angled contour. If you want a strong look use a light touch as it’s easy to build up and harder to correct mistakes. When highlighting you’re bringing something forward and making it pop. You want to highlight areas like the top of the cheekbones, above the lips, Cupid’s bow, bridge of the nose, inner corner of the eye and centre of the eyelid. Illuminating creams add radiance and luminosity. For the eyes we used the Bobbi Brown Chocolate eye palette: a light base all over then darker browns through the socket and outer corners for a soft doe-eyed effect using a fluffy, blending brush. When I’ve finished I like to run my fingers around the eye area to give it a soft focus, well-blended fade. The brow is strong, heavy and masculine, but with a diffused edge so the shape doesn’t look hard or drawn-in. I used a brow pencil and then combed it through. To finish the skin, I used a new Madina product which I’m obsessed with. It’s called Crystal Powder and it’s actually not a powder, it’s a silicone gel, which comes in a compact. You brush it over the T-zone with a brush and it gives a natural matte finish which doesn’t look powdery
