This look demands “Stop-and-pay-attention!”. It has a sexy Helmut Newton-esque, Guy Bourdin quality and I kept the look strong as well as colourful. It’s not pretty, the overall effect is hard glamour and very showy. It’s a real editorial and strong runway look which makes up the majority of my work. I used strong primary colours, acid yellows, lime greens and orange. I won’t lie, this is a tricky look, the hardest we’ve done so far in the series. The key to application is to do the eyes first, because you’re going to get loads of fallout from the eyeshadows where the colour will drop onto your cheeks and under the eyes. Start by creating the shape that you want, pat the colour on quite heavily and then use a clean brush to go in and blend. I like it when the colours start mulching. For example when you put an electric blue near a yellow, you get a beautiful green transition. My secret essential tool is a wet wipe! I wrapped my finger in the wipe to clean-up the fall out and also create the shape and outline of the eye shadow and just before the shadow dries I use my finger to smoosh it all together. There’s been a huge trend again for colour and there are so many amazing brands out there that are providing products with really strong-wearing pigment, like Illamasqua, MAC and NARS. The recent limited edition MAC Antonio Lopez collection was bold artful swooshes of colour and the NARS Guy Bourdin collection was all about femme fatale make-up. I think a lot of women have been scared to put strong shades on the face but this look makes it sexy, beautiful and vibrant.
