This oh too short summer was dreamily spent vacationing in Montauk with the surfers and then later Upstate in Woodstock with the hippies. It was a magical time and although my surf skills go barely further than watching, sorry drooling over Keanu in Point Break & the closest hippie activity I indulged in was an afternoon of tie dyeing, with indigo finger stains still visible, I did discover some must have products that all surfers/hippies would potentially swap their sex wax/ patchouli oil for.
So for my surf gals if Kate Bosworth in Blue Crush is your Spirit Animal this is what you should be looking in to: Doc Martins of Maui Suncreen which like beer can be bought in a 12 pack. Also try Sun Bum which has a range of gorgeous products for your face and skin for in and out of the sea. They make Baby Bum for kids and Sun Bum Pro for those that are out in the sun all day and need more protection. I love the smell of the products and the Pink Grapefruit Lip Balm will always make me think of balmy nights in Montauk around a fire pit being bitten to death by mosquitos. So talking of bugs I spritzed myself with Badger Anti Bug Shake & Spray which is all natural & organic and is good for the skin and bad for the bug.
I rediscovered this amazing Shiseido Sun Protection Foundation Stick which I saw a natural glam gal applying in the toilet at Joni’s where all the cool cats go for a fresh juice to order or a breakfast burrito. Anyway surf chick said that this was the number one choice for gals who want to look good but save their skin from harmful rays as it has an SPF of 37.
For girls on the go here were some top shower tips. Hair tips I found out about were It’s A 10 Miracle Leave In Product.
This baby is so cool it doesn’t even tell you really what it is but it is the ultimate leave in conditioner so for gals on the go spritz on & comb through and the Montauk Summer Ale is waiting
I was also told quite a great tip for gals with longer hair who are hitting the beach. Apply leave in conditioner to wet hair then braid your hair as this protects the sun exposed hair from drying out. The tighter the braid the less water gets in and the conditioner gets to work and when you unravel the braid when on shore you have sexy beach waves that you could spray with my favourite find Brooklyn Beach Hair. This smells better than Bumble’s Surf Spray and is also made using natural ingredients hence the 6 month expiry date. I slathered all over my body Pacifica Body Butter in Tahitian Gardenia which in my humble opinion is probably the best smell of all time. Check out their Lotion Wipes which are moisturising and easy to use. I am a big fan of CB I Hate Perfume’s At The Beach 1966, this perfume story says it all:
‘Imagine it’s about 4 o’clock on a golden summer afternoon and you’ve been at the beach all day rubbing yourself with Coppertone suntan lotion – but Coppertone as it existed in the 60’s, not quite as it is now… You walk into the surf as the waves break on the shore and, bending down to touch the surf, you notice the smell of your warm skin and of the salt water that seems so cold by comparison. It has just the faintest hint of watermelon rind!’
Ok so now for the Hippy things that I discovered whilst blissing out at The Breathe Inn and should be adhered to if Tony Basil in Easy Rider is your Spirit Animal. Firstly after you have made a stop to Flower Power to stock up on sage to burn at home to ward off evil spirits and bad energy & an abundance of healing crystals, you might want to visit my favourite shop in the East Village (on line store too) Live Live. They stock my favourite natural skin care brand Simply Divine Botanicals whose products are blessed by Reiki and the ingredients are also listed with Love & Gratitude. I particularly love their Face The Day Seaweed Serum which you spray on then you apply Plump Up The Volume Facial Mist to activate the serum.
So I love Stick Stone & The Bone (no website) which is at 111 Christopher St New York, NY 10014b/t Bedford St & Bleecker St in West Village which sells all sorts of musical goodies and I stock up on incense and other goodies there.
I like Authentic Cleansing Nectar for hair and body that is 98% Natural of Origin and biodegradable so its good to take camping, I also love all the products from In Fiore which is a skin care brand that make products from flowers and they smell incredible; a must have is the Creme de Fleur which is A nutrient-rich moisture complex for deep hydration, revitalization and cell renewal.
I recently discovered the store at Jivamukti Yoga and this Organic Aloe and Lavender Body Lotion is great in the evening after a bath to send you to a peaceful sleep. Also worth mentioning is Tata Harper as I love their roll on Replenishing Nutrient Complex and for makeup try the Volumizing Lip & Cheek Tint in the prettiest of petal pinks one for my gorgeous hippy gals I suggest Terre D’OC Organic Kohl which comes in 5 shades and this creamy sooty smudgy goodness is going to put the sex into sexpot. I also like an organic nail polish line I discovered called PRITI NYC . I sat around the fire with friends wearing Fire Glow and freaked out when I saw fire flies for the first time and thought it was an intruder on the property with a flash light. What can I say I am thoroughly a city gal with outdoor intentions. So if you can’t decide if you are a Surf or Turf gal I suggest a bit of both because they work in perfect harmony.
