Glitter has made a huge return to the runway and editorial looks but I was inspired to try it out in a more wearable way inspired by the raw unpolished look of grunge: think Kurt Cobain’s messed up eyeliner to Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth but in a fresh updated way using cool new products. If you’re a young woman, you still want to look pretty and that’s where the 90s girlie element comes in: Drew Barrymore, Winona Ryder and really anything that Alicia Silverstone did, from the Aerosmith videos with Liv Tyler to the infamous Cher Horowitz from Clueless. You want your skin to be natural and fresh so take time to prep the skin well before base. I used the Shu Uemura Lightbulb foundation just to cover up redness. We stayed away from black and used Tarnish eyeliner by MAC which is a very dark metallic bottle green and used it heavily under the eye. Blend it in and the more it smudges or bleeds the cooler it looks. It’s going to happen anyway so you work with it rather than fighting to keep it neat. I swept a brown eyeshadow through the socket to give a bit of definition, used a cream colour on the eyelid and then used my finger to pat the glitter on. The Reflects Glitter by MAC is so finely milled that it has that iridescent butterfly wing effect. It looks translucent in the pot but then comes alive on the skin with a pink or green tone. The glitter particles will drop a bit but it doesn’t matter. This isn’t about a perfect flawless look; it’s about having a little mess but still keeping it really pretty. I teamed the eyes with a 90s natural pink on the lip to keep it soft. The overall look is youthful and pretty and it’s a really easy way to wear glitter.
