I recently came across South Sudanese beauty Nyakim Gatwech on Instagram and I was horrified by the accompanying story regarding an Uber driver telling her to bleach her skin. It’s sad to see that there are times within the fashion and beauty industry where darker skin tones are not considered as desirable or valuable as lighter skin tones and therefore I am excited to see women such as Nyakim be rightfully proud of her skin and encourage other girls to embrace that beauty. It is still frustratingly difficult sometimes to get foundations in darker shades with a variety of undertones but brands are slowly but surely getting there. In the high end spectrum some of my favourite brands are Bobbi Brown (Skin Foundation comes in Cool Espresso which is great for cooler & neutral dark skin tones), Becca (Ultimate Coverage Complexion Cream – you only need a tiny amount), NARS (Soft Matte Complete Concealer – full coverage for every blemish) and Giorgio Armani (Luminous Silk Foundation – super lightweight and glowing). There are also high street brands coming up strong, NYX offer their Total Control Drop Foundation in 24 shades and C.A.K.E Cosmetics caters exclusively for deeper skin tones with their cream to powder Foundation.
